

Recently a closed landfill cell was covered with synthetic astroturf using the Watershed Geo closure system.

A new state of the art landfill office, dual scales, maintenance building, and incoming transfer station is planned to be constructed beginning in January, 2023. The landfill is currently constructing a new landfill cell, and also conducting an excavation of a 600,000 Cubic Yard unlined MSW cell and relocating the wastes to a lined cell, environmentally unique in the State of Georgia. The landfill currently has an expected lifespan of over 50 years. The system is operated by a staff of 25 and has a budget of $7 Million per year.

The Newton Solid Waste system includes a 100,000 ton per year Mixed Solid Waste (MSW) landfill and 6 satellite residential transfer stations/convenience centers. Newton County has 110,000 residents and is located 35 miles east of Atlanta. The Newton Solid Waste Management Authority in Historic Covington, Georgia, is seeking a Solid Waste Manager and Executive Director of the Newton County Georgia Solid Waste Enterprise Fund.
